Gunman killed after injuring 3 student at Florida State University

USPA News - A gunman opened fire at a Florida university library early Thursday morning, injuring three students before being killed in an exchange of gunfire with police, authorities said. At least one of the shooting victims was in a critical condition.

The incident began at around 12:30 a.m. local time when the gunman opened fire inside Strozier Library at Florida State University, which is located in the state`s capital city of Tallahassee. Officers who responded to an initial 911 call of an armed subject at the library located the gunman outside of the building, after which a gunfight ensued. "The initial reports indicate that as the officers arrived at the Library, they located the gunman near the entrance," Tallahassee Police spokesman David Northway said. "He was challenged by the officers and given commands to drop his weapon, but the male fired at the officers. The officers returned fire, killing the gunman." Northway said officers located three victims suffering from gunshot wounds, including one victim who was critically wounded and another who was described as being in a stable condition. "All were immediately given medical treatment on scene, and two were transported to local hospitals," the spokesman said. The condition of the third victim was not immediately known. The identity of the gunman, or his possible motive, was not immediately known. University President John Thrasher described Thursday`s shooting as an isolated incident and said there was no further threat to the campus. "Florida State University and Tallahassee police departments have done an extraordinary job taking quick and decisive action to prevent further tragedy, to secure the scene and to keep campus safe," he said. Thrasher said the university would be open on Thursday but all classes scheduled for the day have been canceled while investigators interview witnesses and process the scene.
