Dump truck careens down hill in southwest England, killing 4

USPA News - A dump truck trying to avert an accident careened down a hill in southwest England on Monday and struck several vehicles and pedestrians, killing four people and injuring at least four others, emergency services said. An investigation into the circumstances is underway.

The accident happened at about 4:05 p.m. local time when the dump truck, which was carrying aggregate, collided with a number of vehicles and two pedestrians as it traveled down a hill in Bath, a city about 155 kilometers (96 miles) west of London. Eyewitnesses suggested that the driver had been trying to avoid an accident. "Four people have died at the scene and there are several people injured. Casualties are being taken to the Royal United Hospital in Bath and Southmead Hospital in Bristol," Avon and Somerset Constabulary said in a press statement. "The area is closed off to allow for investigative work to take place." The South Western Ambulance Service (SWASFT) said three people were taken to Royal United Hospital by ambulance while one patient was airlifted to Southmead Hospital in Bristol by the Great Western Air Ambulance. "Those not requiring hospital treatment are currently being assessed and treated at a nearby facility," a spokesperson said.
