USPA NEWS - The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today urged an investigation into the killing of Widad Hussein Ali, a freelance news journalist, in Iraqi Kurdistan on 13 August. “I condemn the murder of Widad Hussein Ali,“ the Director-General said.

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today urged an investigation into the killing of Widad Hussein Ali, a freelance news journalist, in Iraqi Kurdistan on 13 August.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “I condemn the murder of Widad Hussein Ali,“ the Director-General said. “I call on the authorities to investigate this crime and bring its perpetrators to trial so as to protect freedom of expression and freedom of information in the region."-------------- Unidentified armed individuals abducted Widad Hussein Ali in Dohuk city and he was found dead by a roadside a few hours later. Ali was a freelance journalist. He notably reported for the Roj News website.---------------------------------------------------- The Director-General of UNESCO issues statements on the killing of media workers in line with Resolution 29 adopted by UNESCO Member States at the Organization´s General Conference of 1997, entitled “Condemnation of Violence against Journalists.“
